A Note from Inside
"Somalia is known as one of the top three countries in the world most resistant to Christianity. I have been called to spread the gospel among the Somali people, and have done so for 36 years. SIM allows me to work with them in a unique and effective way.
"Statistics report 99 percent of the 15 million Somalis are Muslim. They are also some of the most tech savvy in Africa. Despite a 29+ year unresolved civil war, Somalia has one of Africa’s best internet systems, and its culture revolves around technology (everyone has a mobile phone).
"Introduce the gospel online and you’ve got a “perfect storm” for sharing the good news about Jesus Christ with a people otherwise barricaded from the gospel. SIM’s New Life website project (http://www.noloshacusub.net) is God’s tool in God’s timing.
"This website and social media go where Christian missionaries cannot (see story below). And we are seeing hard-won success through powerful personal conversion testimonies. SIM has worked with Somalis since 1943, and I can’t wait to see what God will yet do."
—Michael Madany; 29-year SIM worker; based in the U.S.
“The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” — Matthew 4:16 (NIV)
An Encouraging Story in a Violent Land
On October 14, 2017, a truck bomb was detonated in a crowded part of Somalia’s capital city, Mogadishu. With more than 350 victims, this tragedy was the single worst bombing in Somalia’s 30+ year civil war. For Somalia, it was comparable to the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center attack in New York City.
The atrocity was shocking; conditions in Somalia had been gradually improving the previous six years. Members of the global diaspora began increasingly returning home to help rebuild their shattered land.
Within two weeks of the bombing in Mogadishu, we received good news. A young man in Somalia successfully completed his final lesson in the basic online Bible course, “One God, One Way” on the New Life website. Mursal’s words in the comments section of the last test he submitted show that he is coming close to the Kingdom.
“I have completed the 12 tests to the best of my ability," he said. "Truly, I now understand many things that I previously did not know. I really want you to tell me more about these three: Paul, John, and Isaiah. Thank you very much.”
We have since connected Mursal with a Christian mentor to guide him and answer his insightful questions.
Join us in praising God for Mursal, and many others, who are responding to the Good News about the Prince of Peace they are encountering on the New Life website or Facebook page. Jihadist violence causes many Muslims to question their religion, and we see this trend among Somalis.
