A Note from Inside Zambia
"A youth center sounds like a place where teenagers might hang out, but in Zambia, the official age of 'youth' is 14 to 35...and those who gather here are doing a lot more than hanging out. Our primary goal is Bible teaching and discipleship, but we also offer leadership training, sports and recreation, arts and crafts, and help with practical life skills, like computer training.
"Mongu is pretty remote, and traditional beliefs are prevalent here. Witchcraft and animistic practices are still going on every day. We’re also starting to see more youth from churches that might be considered cults, as well as from churches teaching a version of the gospel that just isn’t true.
"As a result, these young people need to know true biblical teaching so they can stand strong against all temptations. The Mongu Youth Center gives them a place to feel safe, make friends, and learn the types of things that truly transform their lives (see story below)."
—Laurie Weiandt, 28-year SIM worker; based in Zambia
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Lives Are Changing
A testimony by Aswell Lucas
"I say thanks to have a place called Mongu Youth Center (MYC) in Mongu because MYC has changed my lifestyle completely. When I started coming to MYC my life was bad. I used to smoke and drink with the intention to come and disturb the discussion or Bible study.
"During Bible study or discussion I used to pass silly comments and questions. One day Mr. Kenneth (an MYC leader) asked me a question. He asked why I liked beer so much and why I pass silly questions whenever there is a Bible study? But I didn't answer him. He said to me that I should fear and respect the Word of God.
"I want to say thank you very much to MYC. I have learned life skills including building (block laying) and many more. Honestly speaking, my life has greatly changed."
**UPDATE: This young man joined a discipleship program and was just baptized in June 2018.
Give now to...
Provide a firm foundation of biblical teaching for youth in Zambia as they daily encounter witchcraft and animistic practices.
